Team principal Stefano Domenicali was no doubt pleased with Ferrari’s win in Sepang. That said, both his and Alonso’s post race interviews made it very clear that Ferrari is under no illusion that the F2012 still requires significant development to catch up with the top qualifying teams like McLaren, Red Bull, and Mercedes.
Domenicali is quoted on Ferrari’s official website saying “I asked all my people to push to the maximum to try and bring forward as much as possible the developments planned for the next few races” he also said “Having Fernando leading the championship means nothing and we definitely don’t think all our problems have been made to vanish with the wave of a magic wand.”
The F2012 is no doubt an upper-midfield car in it’s current state and although Domenicali says that “Having Fernando leading the championship means nothing” I would have to disagree. It takes a skilled and consistent driver to bring home a win and an even more skilled driver to do it with a car that is in the pig of a state that the F2012 is at the moment! Alonso deserves credit for that!
I do however agree that with the F2012 being 1-4 tenths off the pace of its fastest rivals the top priority must be improving the car if they are to repeat their Sepang success. No doubt the boys and girls in Maranello are already beavering away at the upgrades!
